Moon Lake Resort | Hainan, China

The challenge was to design a resort that relates to its existing natural environment, create sustainable direct waterfront properties and add a waterfront context to the rear villas area.

The solution was to create non-linear lakes and to minimize direct cross lake views in order to improve the vistas of the marina from the surrounding residential areas.

The property was designed to be in harmony with the lake and farmland. The use of local building materials such as volcano rocks was complemented to create a fresh interpretation of tropical style. Many of these resort villas have integrated boat docks allowing the owners to reach the main lake through a series of inter-connected manmade lakes.  This resort development has been dispersed across the site, catering to the different landscapes and conditions found in Hainan.  The master plan was intended to integrate the landscape and architecture aesthetically and environmentally.  The design concept was to blur and blend the boundary into the built environment and its natural environment.
